Our guide brought us to the village of Bori, a village of the Bena tribe, closely related to the Hamar people of the South Omo region. One of the distinctive aspects of the Bena/Hamar cultures is the "bull-jumping ceremony" that enables a young man to make the transition into adulthood. After having successfully jumped a row of bulls, the young man is eligible to select his wives.
In the Hamar tribe, the bull-jumping ceremony has become something of a tourist attraction. We had seen the Hamar bull-jumping a few days previously near Turmi. However, there were a LOT of tourists. We were very fortunate, however, to be the only foreigners at the bull-jumping in the Bena tribe and the first ever tourists for this village. The whole experience has to be one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had.
